چکیده

Quadratic and even higher order finite elements are interesting candidates for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) due to their improved approximation properties in comparison to linear approaches. The systems of equations that arise from the discretisation of the underlying (elliptic) PDEs are often solved by iterative solvers like preconditioned Krylow-space methods, while multigrid solvers are still rarely used – which might be caused by the high effort that is associated with the numerical realisation of smoothing and intergrid transfer operators. In this note, we discuss the numerical analysis of quadratic conforming finite elements in a multigrid solver. Numerical tests indicate that – if the ‘correct’ grid transfer is used – quadratic elements provide much better (asymptotic) convergence rates than linear finite element spaces: If m denotes the number of smoothing steps, the convergence rates behave asymptotically like O( 1 m2 ) in contrast to O( 1 m ) for linear FEM. The corresponding proof is explained in this note.

A NOTE ON "A SIXTH ORDER METHOD FOR SOLVING NONLINEAR EQUATIONS"

In this study, we modify an iterative non-optimal without memory method, in such a way that is becomes optimal. Therefore, we obtain convergence order eight with the some functional evaluations. To justify our proposed method, some numerical examples are given.

Algebraic Multigrid Preconditioner for a Finite El- ement Method in TM Electromagnetic Scattering

The finite element method (FEM) is applied on an arbitrarily shaped and perfectly conducted cylindrical scatterer whose cross section and material properties are uniform along its infinite axis, say the z axis here. The scatterer is enclosed within a fictitious boundary via a simple first order absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) method is employed as a preconditio...

A Note on Multigrid Convergence

We generalise the abstract V-cycle convergence proof of 20] and 21] to include unsymmetricsmoothing operations as well. In the case of full regularity we obtain better convergence with an increasing number of smoothing steps, thus recovering the results of 2]. Applying our theory to an anisotropic model problem we obtain optimal results in this case as well.

Convergence and Optimality of Higher-Order Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Eigenvalue Clusters

Proofs of convergence of adaptive finite element methods for approximating eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of linear elliptic problems have been given in a several recent papers. A key step in establishing such results for multiple and clustered eigenvalues was provided by Dai et. al. in [8], who proved convergence and optimality of AFEM for eigenvalues of multiplicity greater than one. There it...
